Iran: Law is still a problem for women

Women in Tehran are fighting an uphill battle; they are being put into jails for soliciting their own rights. Nahid Keshavarz, 34, Women’s Rights Activist, is one such individual who was put behind the bars for advocating her rights but even after coming out of the prison, she declared her tireless aim of fighting for her rights, it has become a daily part of my life, said Keshavarz. However, Iranian authorities on their part have tagged it as an attempt of an immoral behavior.
No one wants to go to prison. But if we have to pay a price then we will, like women have all over the world said the 34-year-old, who was held on security-related charges after collecting signatures in Tehran. No doubt, women are entitled to hold jobs but it is also a fact still pulsating in Iran that the society is saturated with men oriented laws pushing women folk at the background. Not only it’s still difficult for women to get divorce but the laws of inheritance are unfair and a woman’s court testimony is worth half than that of a man’s, thus treating them as second-class citizens.
However, the authorities rebuff their charges emphasizing that it is all according to the Islamic sharia law. They advocated that women in their province are better protected than the western countries where they are nothing more than mere commodities. And women in their nation are free to express themselves, a statement strongly negated by the female activists. Seems that there is no respite from the torment of chauvinism for women.
